Konan Jinka: Where the Air Itself Is Spicy, on Hong Kong Road | Yokohama Chinatown
Hi everyone, it's Boss.
I used to think spicy meant Sichuan.
People from Hunan apparently say Sichuan is for babies. I didn't believe it, so I went.
I started coughing the moment I walked in
I hadn't eaten a thing. The air is spicy.
At other places, serious chilli food makes you sweat from the steam. Here, the automatic door opens and you cough.
I looked around at the customers eating calmly, and almost all of them were Chinese. No Japanese being spoken.
At that point you start to feel slightly out of place.
But the two sisters who come over have such lovely smiles that you can't escape.
Result: drenched in sweat
I asked for a second hand towel.
The friend drinking next to me told me my face looked terrible.
And yet on the walk home I was thinking "I want to go back." It's the same as a sauna. What is that?
If you love spicy food, this is your place. If you can't take it, just walking past the front will sting your nose. That's Chinatown too.
Hong Kong Road has become the spicy street
At some point Hong Kong Road turned into the street where the spicy restaurants gather.
I've been watching this town for twenty-six years, and it's still changing.
